Sherlock (five reasons why)

this is a spoiler-free post. (you're welcome.)

1. This show is real.
Seriously. Sherlock is an adaptation of Conan Doyle's stories that takes place in modern-day England, with Watson and Holmes sharing a flat at 221B, and every time I walk away from an episode, I'm just kind of convinced that it's all real. That if I were to ever visit Britain, I'd be able to saunter down Baker Street and see the two of them hailing a cab, Sherlock's long coat whipping in the wind.

Because although the seasons are painfully short (only three episodes), they're always moving forward. John and Sherlock grow and change like real people, becoming more comfortable with each other and with the audience as the show progresses.

I've just started re-watching the episodes with Hannah, and going from season 3 to season 1 was really interesting because the characters had changed SO much, without me even noticing.

2. so quotable

When I got back from visiting Kenzie over March Break (that's when I first started watching this show) I would just quote sections back and forth to myself, and then laugh.
My family was concerned.

But anyways, now that I've converted Hannah, I have a partner in crime and we can quote scenes together. She needs a lot of prompting. But that's okay, because I just text Kenzie (who has pretty much every episode memorized) and then I don't feel quite as crazy.
But yeah, we basically just quote this show all the time and have fun and no one even knows.

3. It's absolutely hilarious...

I spend most of each episode quietly sniggering to myself. Between Sherlock's visit to Buckingham palace (while dressed in nothing but a sheet!) a psychopathic villain who...smiles...a lot, and John's constant fixing of Sherlock's mistakes

("he means, 'you're welcome.'"

"Sherlock, we can't giggle. It's a crime scene.")

It's just such a good time. The mysteries are solid, but even when the music starts to send shivers down my spine I'm still laughing because of the expression on John's face, or the way Sherlock solved the entire mystery but missed the social cue sitting right in front of his face.

4. ...but it knows how to hit you right in the feels, too.

Life is not always perfect. John can't keep a girlfriend, Sherlock gets bullied by the other cops on the police force, and sometimes they hurt people without meaning to.

But although they bluster and bicker and sometimes storm out of the room, furious, the characters on this show really do care about each other. Not just John and Sherlock - big brother Mycroft Holmes, the landlady, Mrs. Hudson, and even Detective Inspector Lestrade - interact so much like real people. They sometimes rub each other the wrong way, they know exactly what to say to make the other people so angry, but you come to see over time that they would do anything for each other.

5. John and Sherlock

So many people ship Johnlock as a couple, but I don't see that at all. To me, one of my favourite parts of this show is the love between the two men, but not in a romantic sense. Over the course of the three seasons they demonstrate altruistic love - the sacrificial kind Jesus showed for us - many times. And that was really cool, because in most shows, love is demonstrated in at least a slightly selfish sense. Often one or both of the characters benefit from the relationship, even if they do honestly care for each other.
And I'm not saying that John and Sherlock would be better off apart, but they do sacrifice a lot to stay friends. John consistently puts Sherlock's needs above his own (causing many of his romantic relationships to crash and burn,) and although Sherlock appears not to need anyone, you come to realize that he sacrifices for John, too. And I haven't seen non-romantic love portrayed in such a true sense in a long time, if ever before.

Basically, this show is my favourite. If you haven't seen it, you need to. Right now. And if you have...what did you think? Did I get it right?
