dear Olivia // you'll be fine

[May 2013]

Dear Olivia,

it's been a while since you last started work on a novel. Why is that?

You're not too busy...or too tired...or too bored. You have a protagonist, a host of secondary characters, conflict, subplots, and a catalyst to start the whole thing off.

So what's the problem?

Some people might call it writer's block, even if you don't really believe it exists. It would explain that feeling that you have - like your story is sitting behind a big stone wall and you keep running headlong into it instead of simply opening the gate and walking through.

And maybe you've been reciting Jeremiah 29:11 over and over in your head mingled with prayers of "Jesus, please give me a plotline"...maybe you've been wondering if you'll ever write anything good again.
And maybe that's okay.

But it's time to stop moping around and do something about it, because this story idea isn't going to open the gate and invite you in. You're going to have to work for it. So instead of waiting for a good idea to pop into your head...make your own.

Write every day.
Re-read those writer's craft books you have downstairs.
Try plotline after plotline until you find what fits.

Maybe nothing will - and then you have to move on. Skylar's story will keep; but don't give up on it just yet. Give it a few months first.

And stop to breathe every now and then, because it's important to remember that God really does have a plan. I promise.

You'll be fine.
