afternoon

They yell at me to stop taking pictures, but they can't stop laughing as they shake their fists at me through the window. I smile and bring the camera's zoom in a little closer, safe in my rocking chair; a mere observer to their fun.

The basketball goes flying through the air, and they run across the lawn. The skies are still gray and there are no leaves on the trees yet, but the air is warmer and when I took Toby for a walk earlier, I could hear the birds singing. There's something about the sound of birdsong that makes me not mind the clouds so much.

The guitar plays softly downstairs and I can smell tonight's lasagne cooking as I type. This morning I worked in the first grade Sunday School class, and one of the girls drew me a picture labeled "to Oliveo." (when she saw me coming over, she snuck a quick glance at my nametag and changed it to "Oliviea.") The whole encounter kind of made my day. Actually, just hanging out with a bunch of crazy first-graders made me happy. (although, tired. It's only an hour, but when they've all been picked up by parents I feel like a tornado has whipped through, left the classroom in chaos, and snuck back out the door with most of my energy tucked under its arm. I'm not even sure if that makes sense. But yeah. It's fun.)

I've been thinking a lot about birthdays lately. My parents' birthdays are at the end of this month, and my 16th (a completely intimidating number, by the way) is at the beginning of May. I like birthdays. And afternoons, actually. Today's was a good one.

(I really need to find a less-awkward way to end my posts.)

  1. Aw That is so cute! I love working in the Sunday school at my church. Yeah Sunday school can definitely be compared to a tornado :)
