photography // a guest post by Hannah

Hello followers of Epiphanies! My name is Hannah. Olivia has given me the honour of guest posting on this lovely blog of hers, and I wanted to talk to you guys about something that has been a big part of my life for the last few years: photography.

It was about three and a half years ago when I first got into photography. I'm not exactly sure what got me started, but as soon as I did I was hooked. There is so much "scope for the imagination" in taking a photograph of even the simplest of things, and I love the idea of being able to capture a moment to keep forever. I'm still a beginner, but I wanted to share with you some of the things that I've learned about photography since I first began. Whether photography is already something you love, or something you haven't really thought much about before, I hope something in this will be a help to you.

 1. You Don't Need $10,000. Do you need 7,000 dollar camera? Do you need a crazy high-tech editing program, fifty removable lenses, and a Louis Vuitton camera bag? Nope, you definitely don't. You can take a beautiful photograph with absolutely any sort of camera. Start where you are, with what you have.

  2. Find Beauty in the Ordinary. There's beauty to be found in the ordinary, day-to-day sort of things that we'd usually pass by without a second glance. Photography has helped me realize that. One of the keys to photography is observing the things around you, realizing the beauty in them, and trying to capture it.

  3. Try to Avoid Those "Where's My Camera!!" Moments. There are honestly not many situations more frustrating than missing the perfect photo opportunity because you couldn't find your camera in time. The way to avoid that is to have a certain easy-to-get-to spot where you try to always keep your camera. That way, you'll always know where to run when inspiration strikes. For me, that spot is on top of my bookcase.

 4. Don't Over-Edit. Editing can be lovely and really helpful. Making a photo black & white will add a classy, elegant effect, and sometimes a photo needs a little lightening or saturation adjustment. But going completely overboard with the editing can ruin a great picture. Moderation is key!

 5. Keep Your Photos Safe. Computers may seem like safe places, but sometimes they inexplicably quit working and everything on them can vanish. Once our laptop overheated, and over a year's worth of precious photographs were lost. It was awful! Don't let that happen to you. Photos are precious because they capture memories and moments in your life. You can keep your photos safe by uploading them to online photo galleries like Flickr or Picasa Web Albums.

  6. Practice Makes Perfect! There are so many fun ways you can practice photography. You could take a couple minutes to sneak around your house "detective-style" to find interesting things to photograph, or maybe do a "Day in Pictures" project where all throughout the day you take a photo of whatever you're doing or whatever is going on at that time. The more you practice, the more you'll learn and improve.
