a different sort of November

NaNoWriMo website

So, I was going to do NaNoWriMo**. Toss my lot in with the hundreds of other authors striving to write 50,000 words this month.

I did it last year, after all, and it was great fun.

But with one thing and another (school, lack of time, lack of planned story idea) I decided that this year wasn't for me. Perhaps 2013?

I'm doing something a little different this month. It wasn't my original plan to do this - and I'm not doing it instead of NaNo. It's just something that I feel I personally need to do.

You see, when I participated in NaNoWriMo last year, I got up at 6:30am every morning (welll...almost every morning) and wrote for an hour and a half before breakfast. This meant I had a bunch of words under my belt already when I started the day, leaving me tons of time to do schoolwork.

And it really disturbed me that I'm willing to sacrifice sleep, time, energy, free time, and time with my friends in order to write my daily amount...but that I'm not willing to do the same for God.

There's always something else I "have to do" when it reaches my scheduled devotion time. Maybe I'm "too tired" or "really should play my flute," or just about ANYTHING...but I'm definitely "too busy" to read my Bible for 5 minutes.

But last year, during NaNo? BOOM. I dropped everything for my writing. I wrote hard and sacrificed (especially sleep) but now I'm realizing that I can't won't even get out of bed 20 minutes earlier in the morning to read my Bible.

Really?

Yeah. So I'm doing things a little differently this month. Since I'd already decided not to do NaNo, I made the decision a little more than a week ago to take a few minutes in the morning to spend time with God. I'm setting my alarm a little earlier, and as hard as it is, I'm turning my light on and forcing myself awake, because I really do want to do this. I'm not very good at it yet (I didn't do so well this morning) but I'm determined to stick with it.

My church has a year-long reading plan that I've been following, and I'm also working through this Bible study and hoping to read this book at some point too.

So...that's about it. -grin-

**November is National Novel Writing Month, for those who didn't know.

  1. Thank you for this! I really need to remember this month that no matter how crazy my life gets with NaNo, God's Word comes first. A great reminder.
