growing up

we all live in the blue neighborhood. most of us have normal lives... but those of us who dont hide it... well youll find out.:
via

I tried to figure out why I don't like your house
and then I realized
it's because I like things to be simple.

You have winter art on the walls
but you don't like the snow
quotes advocating a way of life
you don't live
and family heirlooms
purchased
from an antique store.
someone else's memories
fill this space
and it jars me.
what I see isn't who you are.
we grew up together
agreed on everything
and here I am
and there you are
with a list of everything we said
we'd never do
and you've checked off every
single
one.

Your house is full of a
peace
you don't possess
and everything is
perfect
but I know the secrets!
I know the
skeletons
in your closet by name
I just never thought I'd meet them
face to face.
I see the look in your eyes
when I ask about him
and I hear the echo of silence
behind your reply
and I've been searching
but I can't find it
in your house.

just a little something I wrote this summer... growing up is a funny old thing, isn't it?

lately I've been
watching the musketeers
writing the same old story for what feels like the 100th time (but is really only the 4th)
feeling nervous/excited for my next adventure -- university!

what are you up to??
xx,
Olivia

  2. I really liked this! It's a fantastic character study, and very well written. And I know you'll love university--in my experience, anyway, college isn't always fun, but it's almost always interesting.

    1. I love that you called it a "character study"! It made me squiggly inside - plus, when I went back and read it with that lens in mind, it made my whole poem look different. :) Also, thanks for the encouragement about university! I'm really hoping the first couple weeks go well!

Growing up is definitely SUCH a weird thing. You captured this SO beautifully. Wow. I'm astounded.

    1. Growing up is SO weird... but what an adventure! I'm excited for October... to look back and see where I am now vs where I'll be then :)

  6. Wow, nice poem, Olivia. :) I love the thought process you wrote about and the disconnect. It was really interesting. I've never considered that before--the way a person's house does or does not reflect him/herself.

    University! That's so exciting!

What I've been up to: reading a lot, working part time, and that's about it. :P

    1. Danielle, I hadn't considered it before either!! It just hit me like a ton of bricks one day and I was like, "I have to write this down".

Working?? Where? Making money is always a plus :p lol

  7. I felt like I needed to snap my fingers in respect and awe at the end. It's so true though... I had a few similar incidents recently. We can be so close with someone that it feels like an unbreakable bond, and then we come back years later and so much has changed. And yet, we still know their history and remember a time before when they were different and it's so strange and sort of heart breaking.
    And good luck with University!

  10. I LOVE THIS <3

I just felt like this poetry is so deep and so mature. Like that's kinda a weird word to describe poetry but it felt so...RIGHT. I don't know. But I loved it <3 SO MUCH. You are an amazing writer.

    1. Literally no one has described my poetry as mature before, and I can't tell you how much I love it! Thank you :)

  11. If I could tell you how much I could pin point this to moments in my life. THIS IS SO AMAZING! :)
